Jazz Intro Lab is open to instrumental students who can perform with reasonable confidence on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass guitar, piano, or drums. Students build a foundation in jazz through the study and performance of styles such as swing, funk, and rock. The course also introduces improvisation, ensemble playing, and the musical elements that give each style its distinctive sound. Performance opportunities are determined each year.

Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned instrumental ensemble for students who demonstrate strong performance and sight-reading skills on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, string bass or bass guitar, or drums. Students study, rehearse, and perform music from a variety of jazz styles while strengthening their listening, ensemble, and improvisational skills. The group presents several major performances each year and may also participate in festivals and community events. Occasional rehearsals and performances take place outside the regular school day.

Devin DiBernardo

Devin DiBernardo directs Jazz Intro Lab and Jazz Ensemble at Londonderry High School. He helps students strengthen their ensemble skills, explore different jazz styles, and develop confidence as improvisers and performers.

Through rehearsals, concerts, festivals, and community performances, students learn to listen closely, respond to one another, take musical risks, and discover their individual voices within the ensemble.
